You win this round, my friend. My cavalier attitude allowed you to reclaim this prize. But some day, when your renewal is due, I will strike again. The asking price will be $30,000—due partially to spite and partially to anticipated inflation.

I purchased this domain in April of 2003. It was my personal website for years… until I accidentally let it expire one day and some squatter swooped it up. Why? I don’t know. When I called him, he insisted that it wasn’t for sale — then decided he would be willing to part with it for $3000. I countered with $20 but he laughed in my face. I hung up and vowed to track down every living member of his family and make them pay. But that was just me being dramatic.

Instead, I’ve been patiently waiting. Waiting for this day. The day it would expire for him and I could swoop in and steal it right back. AND THAT’S JUST WHAT I DID!

So I’m very pleased to report, that after a two year hiatus, tylerriewer.com will be coming back into action. And rest assured, I will never let it go again. (Unless of course you want to buy it for $3000.)

So we did. And we looked. She reached her little hands up trying to reach the taller plants, and giggled over the fake owl that kept watch. She told me broccoli is her favorite, and I pointed out how some leaves looked like hearts and others like stars.

“Mommy, that girl in the scarf. She’s my person. She teaches me things.”

And just like that, Natalie made my whole night.

Excellent. But, a few notes: 1. Captain Ahab? I assume you mean the character from Moby Dick. You do realize you cannot impersonate a character from a book, right? That’s kind of the point of a book: you get to create your own nuances. When I read this, I picture you doing a generic pirate impression, but with slightly fewer references to the plank, booty, and loot. 2. Bill Cosby: You did this impression before the trip. 3. Dolphins: I want to hear this.

I had so much time in the car during my road trip that I thought I should try to master a few impersonations. Seemed like something I should have up my sleeve. Really, who knows when it might come in handy… job interview, trapped in an elevator, whatever.

Anyway, “master” may be a little interpretive, but I had a good time. And for the record, when I performed them for Ashley she was crying with laughter, so… take that for what it’s worth.

One of my resolutions at the start of this year was to take a photo roadtrip.

I’m leaving on that roadtrip today. And I plan on hitting each of the states highlighted here.

I’ll be back in two weeks.

Last night, as I was falling asleep, I was thinking about how anxious I am for Ty to get here. I just can’t wait to really talk to him. About so many things that are going on. Because my brother is good. That’s the best word I can think to describe him. He’s full of good. I respect him so much. And he inspires me, he pushes me, and gives me clarity like no one else can.

I just can’t wait for that crazy ole coot to roll into town.

Resolutions for 2009

I hate new year resolutions. That said; I’m inspired by this post. Ol’ Tyler; always making me better.

I know a guy who teaches history at a local high school. He’s about my age, and he’s working on his second book. He’s had articles published in several major magazines, he’s learning a foreign language and he takes piano lessons.

I don’t normally go for the whole resolutions thing, but I’m doing it this year.

And I’m putting them here so I feel a little more accountable. They may not make sense to you. That doesn’t matter. This is for me.

Bring camera everywhere

Read one book per month

Learn how to tie a tie four different ways and use each one

Get something published on McSweeney’s

Travel to at least four different places

Simple daily exercises (pushups, situps… hey, it worked for Bo Jackson)

Eat something that scares me (ex: haggis)

Consciously look for ways to help other people

Gain 50 new Ryler Society members

Write one short story every month

Take one weekend photo road-trip

Learn how to make twelve new meals

Earn $500 with camera

Respond to emails faster

Set aside one day each month for total solitude

This is great for two reasons. One… I didn’t know Dan was officially my attorney. Now that he is, I can say “YOU’LL BE HEARING FROM MY LAWYER!” whenever someone litters on the street or refuses me a free refill at a restaurant. My power will know no end! Two… well, did your attorney sign his/her card with a cute, little heart? I doubt it.
